World's Fastest Memory Chip

Hynix Semiconductor, the world's third-largest maker of memory chips, said Thursday that it has developed the world's fastest memory chip, with wide-ranging graphics applications.
The 550MHz DDR SDRAM (double-data-rate synchronous dynamic random access memory) chip, which it claims is the fastest available in this class of products, will go into mass production starting in April, the company said.

The achievement came nearly eight months after Hynix produced a 500MHz DDR SDRAM chip, the company said.

Manufactured with 0.11-micron design rule applied production process, the new chip should benefit memory-intensive graphics applications in desktop and laptop computing, especially for high-speed computer games, a Hynix official said.
