Vendors: Consumers safe from DRAM hike
Dahna McConnachie

PC consumers should not be hit by increased prices, or forced to purchase computers with less memory as a result of rising DRAM price rises. At least for now.

Major PC vendors Acer, Hewlett-Packard and IBM told PC World they remain unconcerned by the ICIS-LOR analysis released this week showing DRAM prices to have risen from US$25 this time last year to the current US$39.

"Computer memory is like trading gold on the stock market," said Acer's marketing director Raymond Vardanega.

"There are so many variables. Acer has an efficient supply chain and we have not seen a significant cost increase at this stage. The horizon is still very hazy though, and we will keep an extremely close watch on the market," he said.
